How do you accommodate 14 to 16 guests for sit-down holiday meals? You add a 12 x 20” side addition! This 1960’s side-split home in Elmvale / Alta Vista, has generously proportioned rooms throughout except that it lacked sufficient entertaining space on the main level.
The owner’s vision was to expand the main ground floor with a side addition without altering the balance of the home. The original wood burning fireplace was replaced with a 2-sided natural gas fireplace that acts as both a focal point and a partial privacy partition between the living and reading room.
Large windows allow natural light to filter into the home – making the space feel larger than it is. The hardwood floors and trim were matched as closely as possible – to maintain a seamless transition between existing and new space.
The owners selected a cultured stone to clad the fireplace and continued with this selection on the exterior of the side addition – thereby creating an aesthetic link between the interior and exterior.
An entertaining space that feels like it was always there!
